Bio

Shaun Caveny is a dedicated baseball coach who believes that the greatest impact a coach can have extends far beyond the baseball field. His coaching philosophy is built around developing disciplined, confident, selfless young men while creating a culture centered on accountability, preparation, teamwork, and a commitment to excellence.

As a coach with the Pittsford Mendon Baseball Program, Caveny has been instrumental in building a program culture where players are encouraged to compete at a high level while understanding the importance of putting the team before the individual. He places a strong emphasis on preparation, attention to detail, fundamentals, mental toughness, and doing things the right way every day.

Caveny believes that successful teams are built through trust and shared commitment. His approach focuses on developing players both individually and collectively—helping athletes understand their roles, embrace challenges, support their teammates, and take pride in representing their school and community.

A Culture of Excellence

Under Caveny’s coaching philosophy, Pittsford Mendon Baseball has experienced tremendous success while maintaining a strong emphasis on character and team culture. The program's accomplishments include a Section V Championship, Regional Championship, and New York State Championship, culminating in a historic 2025 season.

The 2025 Pittsford Mendon team finished 20-6, capturing the program's first sectional championship in 24 years before continuing its postseason run with victories in the regional final and state tournament. The Vikings ultimately defeated defending state champion Maine-Endwell 2-0 to capture the New York State Championship.

While championships are celebrated, Caveny believes the most meaningful measure of a program is the development of its players and the relationships built along the way.

Developing More Than Baseball Players

Caveny is passionate about using baseball as a vehicle for teaching life lessons. He challenges his players to understand that qualities such as work ethic, resilience, accountability, leadership, humility, and perseverance are just as important as anything that happens between the lines.

His goal is for every player who comes through the program to leave as a better teammate, leader, student, and person than when they arrived.

"Team before individual. Process before results. Do the little things right."

Caveny also encourages his players to give back to their community and understand the responsibility that comes with representing their teammates, families, school, and program. Whether organizing charitable efforts, supporting teammates, or helping younger players, he believes leadership is demonstrated through actions rather than titles.

Coaching Philosophy

Develop the Person.
Build character, confidence, accountability, and leadership that will last well beyond baseball.

Build the Team.
Create an environment where players genuinely care about one another and understand that collective success comes before individual recognition.

Embrace the Process.
Teach players to focus on preparation, fundamentals, effort, and the things they can control.

Compete Every Day.
Expect players to bring energy, toughness, and purpose to every practice and every game.

Leave a Legacy.
Challenge each generation of players to make the program better than they found it.

For Caveny, coaching is ultimately about creating an experience that players will carry with them long after their final game. Championships may be part of the story, but the relationships, lessons, memories, and character developed along the way are what make coaching truly meaningful.
